Thyroid Surgery MENA

Thyroid Surgery MENA

Thyroid surgery, also known as thyroidectomy, is a surgical procedure performed to remove part or all of the thyroid gland. There are different types of thyroid surgery:

1. Hemithyroidectomy (Thyroid Lobectomy)

2. Total Thyroidectomy

3. Subtotal Thyroidectomy

Thyroid surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision in the front of the neck to access the thyroid gland. The specific surgical technique and extent of thyroidectomy depend on the reason for surgery and the size and location of the thyroid disorder.

After surgery, patients may need to stay in the hospital for observation, especially if a total thyroidectomy is performed. Complications of thyroid surgery can include damage to nearby structures such as the parathyroid glands (which regulate calcium levels) or the recurrent laryngeal nerve (which controls the vocal cords), as well as bleeding or infection.

Following thyroid surgery, patients may need to take thyroid hormone replacement medication to maintain normal thyroid function if the entire thyroid gland is removed. Recovery time varies, but most people can resume normal activities within a few weeks. Regular follow-up appointments with healthcare providers are important to monitor thyroid function and overall health.
